Description
Makusha has been a journalist since 1985.
Educated at Oberlin College Ohio, University of Zimbabwe - BSC Econs, the national media in Zimbabwe, Independent Media, Rural Media, Industrial Media, Human Rights Media all two year stints.
Now editor - changezimbabwe.com - his own website which he's trying to commercialise, though "it is really a labour of love for my country and democracy."
"As my journalism does not really pay (labour of love, and to keep myself in in the field) I work as a mobile parking attendant (which gives me time during my site visits with my laptop to edit and upload media."
"When I arrived in the UK, I felt a responsibility, that I have the freedom to write which my collegues in Zimbabwe did not have, so naturally I had to established a website. I applied for may democracy and media funds, none responded positively, so I just continued doing what I can on my budget, now 350 000 hits per month, is fine for me. I upload about two stories a day on average, so the statistic shows me that all those who read the top newswebsites, also come to changezimbabwe for my unique stories which are all about democratic change. Of course I would like it to be able to pay for itself, and for me, but I will not stop just because it is not making money. It is about informing people, so that they can revolt against the undemocratic system, encouraging activism by writing about the things that other activits are doing, making it look normal to be an activist. Exposing corruption, and encouraging ideological debate."
