Sowdo is a freelance sports reporter on Somali-language radio which broadcasts across Africa. She got started when, as a teenager, she used to call in to soccer talk shows on the radio in Mogadishu. One day, she says, the radio station was bombed and half the staff ran for their lives. The station manager needed some new staff in a hurry and, impressed by her articulate analysis, approached her and hired her on as a commentator.
